Tadeo himself has been haunted by his acts in the past and wishes to make some vengrance of amends with Dulce. She then kills herself to deny happiness from Tadeo. The literal reconstruction of her home from the rubble to which it had been reduced represents the steps isxbel victims take toward healing their emotional and psychological wounds. So maybe I have all of this all wrong, maybe not, maybe a little of both.
Allende reveals this theme through character development, conflict and symbolism. And to have it all disappear in thin air and give way for love?

For those who fight, the cost of being embedded in battle can harden soldiers against compassion, nostalgia and pity. Allende also alludes to one of the age old theme of love and heartbreak; however she also incorporates the idea of revenge alongside it.
